Art Education

Developing each child’s creativity and artistic abilities at all age groups is a primary focus at Highpoint. Artistic expression is integrated into many subject areas. Art History and Fine Arts are an integral part of the instructional program.  In Elementary, the media used to create Art primarily consists of drawing paper, construction paper, tissue paper, crayon, colored pencil, drawing pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, tempera, watercolor and acrylic. Students’ Artwork will be exhibited throughout the school, displayed at the Annual Art Fair, in bulletin boards throughout the school and entered into local competitions such as “The Fair.”
In Middle School, the curriculum focuses on students understanding the significance of visual arts in the world. Students will recognize significant works of Western and non-Western Art and will understand the chronological development of art movements including the Renaissance, Fauvism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, and Pop. Students will also understand that by responding to art they will be able to connect with different cultures and time periods. Students will use the SmartBoards and their iPads to access on-line Art Museums, interactive Art-related websites and to learn about the different Master Artists throughout our History. Students will be exposed to many works and influences of Master Artists including Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Matisse, Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Miro, Picasso, and Warhol.

After a period of lecturing and interaction, students create their own inspiration and interpretation of the discussed art movement. Students will realize that creating art involves a variety of strategies that will be used to communicate personal meaning and self-expression. Students will learn and will be expected to apply elements (line, shape, form, texture, color, value, and space) and principles (repetition, variety, rhythm, proportion, movement, balance, emphasis, and unity) in their work to effectively communicate their ideas.

Music Education

The Music curriculum at Highpoint is designed so that children not only develop an appreciation for music, but also so that it can be the tool for shaping their growth, creativity and imagination. We believe that children who grow up with music are exposed to better learning opportunities in all other subject areas.

Although classes are only once a week, our enthusiastic Music Teacher certainly inspires in our students the love for music. Each child experiences Music through song, basic theory and composition, classical music, Broadway Musicals and performance. Students work with Recorders as well as Smartboard lessons to develop the core curriculum. Music class is expressionistic since students are encouraged to put their own thoughts and feelings into their music-making.

We believe that Music stretches one's understanding of self, which in turn helps us understand others.
